Whatsapp to let users revoke sent messages, track recipient's location



Instant messaging app Whatsapp is in line to introduce a brand new feature which will enable users to revoke and edit messages. For now, the feature is available on the beta version of the app on iOS platform only.
This much-anticipated feature could prove a fancy option and a saviour tool for users who accidently send a specific message to a wrong person or for ones who face awkward moment with a poor choice of word.
According to media reports, this new feature will help users to remotely delete or edit a message on recipient's device if the message has not been read by the other message.

Congress MP E Ahamed suffers cardiac arrest, condition critical: RML hospital sources


Lok Sabha member and former union Minister E Ahamed was on Tuesday collapsed in Parliament During the address by President Pranab Mukherjee to the joint sitting of both Houses.
RML Hospital sources have said that Ahamed has suffered cardiac arrest and his condition is critical and he has been put on life support system.
78-year-old Ahamed, who is the president of Indian Muslim League, complained of uneasiness and breathlessness, sources said.

Gang rape streamed live on Facebook, Swedish Police arrests 3


Three young men suspected of gang raping a woman in Sweden and livestreaming the attack on Facebook have been detained, police said, urging social media users today to turn over the footage.
The suspects, aged 18, 20 and 24, were arrested early Sunday in an apartment in Uppsala, 70 kilometres (45 miles) north of Stockholm, in the presence of victim after members of a Facebook group saw the attack streamed live and alerted police.

Social media giant Facebook announced on Sunday that it will introduce new measures to combat fake news in Germany, as Europe's largest economy and most populous nation enters an election year.
"It's important to us that the reports and news posted on Facebook are reliable," a blog post on the Silicon Valley firm's German website read. German politicians have warned that populist parties and foreign nations could use fake news to try and influence parliamentary elections slated for September or October.

Supreme Court rejects plea to allow Jallikattu before Pongal




The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the plea seeking to allow Jallikattu, a bull-taming sport played during Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu.
The Court while turning down the plea termed it ‘unfair of the petitioner to ask the bench to pass an order’ .
The Apex Court had banned Jallikattu in 2014 on grounds of animal cruelty which later led to the protests from political parties across the state. Later, in November last year, SC dismissed the state government’s plea for a review of its 2014 judgment.

Post demonetisation bank vaults have been flushed with illegitimate cash, evaded income and loan repayments, IT officials have revealed.According to data shared by Income Tax officials, Rs 3-4 lakh crore of evaded income has been deposited in banks post demonetisation. The report also revealed that nearly Rs 80,000 cr of repayment of loans done in cash post demonetisation.
Income tax department is scrutinising details of all bank deposits, the officials said. More than Rs 2 lakh has been deposited in over 60 lakh bank accounts post demonetisation.

Apple team, inter-ministerial group to hold talks on Jan 25 on setting up manufacturing unit in India

A team of the US-based iPhone maker Apple is set to hold talks with a group of senior officials from ministries, including IT and finance, on January 25 to discuss its demands for setting up a manufacturing unit in the country.
Officials from departments of commerce, industrial policy and promotion (DIPP), revenue, environment and forest, electronics and information technology (DeITY) will take part in the deliberations.
In a communication to the government, the Cupertino-based technology major has asked for several tax and other incentives, including long-term duty exemptions, to enter the manufacturing sector in India.

PM Modi to take up electoral reforms issue at all-party meet ahead of budget session


Pressing ahead with his electoral reforms agenda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to take up the issues of changes in poll funding rules and holding of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies at an all-party meeting before the Budget session.
A top BJP leader said Modi, who had broached the issue in such a meeting before the last session as well, wants to build a consensus due to the significance of the exercise.
“The Prime Minister will call a meeting in this regard. We are in power and still pushing for reforms in poll funding.  I do not think any party will be against it,” he told reporters.
Modi has been underlining the need for poll reforms time and again but the matter could not make any serious headway as the last session was washed out due to protests over demonetisation.

Petrol price hiked by Rs 1.29 a litre, diesel gets dearer by 97 paise


Petrol price was hiked on Sunday by Rs 1.29 a litre -- the third increase in a month, and diesel rate was raised by 97 paise a litre. The increase in rates announced by oil firms is excluding state levies and the actual hike will be higher.
The actual hike after considering VAT would be Rs 1.66 a litre in Delhi for petrol and Rs 1.14 for diesel.This is the third increase in petrol price in one month and the second in case of diesel in one fortnight.
Petrol price was on December 17 hiked by Rs 2.21 a litre and diesel by Rs 1.79 per litre, excluding local levies.The actual hike after considering VAT came to Rs 2.84 per litre in Delhi for petrol and Rs 2.11 for diesel.
After Sunday's hike, petrol in Delhi will now cost Rs 70.60 a litre from Monday as compared to Rs 68.94 currently. Similarly, a litre of diesel will cost Rs 57.82, up from Rs 56.68.
Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL) revise rates on 1st and 16th of every month based on average international price in the previous fortnight.
"The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and Rupee-US Dollar exchange rate warrant increase in selling price of petrol and diesel, the impact of which is being passed on to the consumers with this price revision," IOC said in a statement.
It said the movement of prices in the international oil market and foreign exchange rate shall continue to be monitored closely and developing trends of the market will be reflected in future price changes.

Political parties cannot use religion, caste and language to seek votes, rules SC



In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court said on Monday that political parties can't seek votes in the name of religion, race, caste, community or language.
A seven-judge Constitution bench of the SC by majority held the decision saying mixing state with religion is not constitutionally permissible and secular ethos underlined in the constitution has to be maintained.
The bench, headed by chief justice TS Thakur, ruled that elections are essentially a secular activity.
The verdict could have a massive impact on the crucial assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Gunman dressed as Santa Claus opens fire at nightclub in Turkey; 35 dead

A gun attack was executed at a nightclub in Istanbul on early hours of Sunday, said city’s governor. At least 35 people have been killed in the gun attack.
40 other people were wounded in the assault which took place in the early hours of Sunday during a New Year’s Eve celebration, said Vasip Sahin.    
As per media reports, the gunman entered Istanbul nightclub dressed as Santa Claus.
Gov. Vasip Sahin said the attacker, armed with a long-barreled weapon, killed a policeman and a civilian outside the club before entering and firing on people partying inside. He did not say who may have carried out the attack.

India, Pakistan exchanges list of nuclear installations under bilateral agreement

 



India and Pakistan on Sunday exchanged for the 26th consecutive year a list of their nuclear installations under a bilateral agreement that prohibits them from attacking each other’s atomic facilities.
“India and Pakistan today exchanged, through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad, the list of nuclear installations and facilities covered under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations between India and Pakistan,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.
The agreement, which was signed on December 31, 1988 and entered into force on January 27, 1991, says the two countries inform each other of nuclear installations and facilities to be covered under the agreement on January 1 of every calendar year.
